In an interview that will air Monday night 0n CNN, President Obama shot down critics who have said that he doesn?t do enough ?hanging out? with the DC deal makers who can help him get things accomplished in the White House.
The Obamas have made a conscious effort to make more time for their daughters Sasha and Maliah in the evening and many people think that they should be shaking hands and socializing around DC.
?Sometimes Michelle and I not doing the circuit and going out to dinners with folks is perceived as us being cool,? Obama said. ?It actually really has more to do with us being parents.?
Both political parties have criticized the president for not achieving the bipartisanship that he promised in his 2008 campaign. ?In the interview, Obama reveals that he turns down many social engagements because he wants to spend more time with his family.
??Sometimes on the weekends, we may turn down the invitation to this or that or the other just because we?re trying to carve out family time,? Obama said. ?And I think that?s sometimes interpreted as me not wanting to be out there slapping backs and wheeling and dealing. That really has more to do with just the stage we are in our lives.?
It?s no secret that the President wants to make sure that his children have him in their lives. ?He wants to set an example for them and be there for them during these ever so important adolescent years. ?I guess some people forget that he isn?t just the leader of the free world, he is also the head of his household. ?If he isn?t there for his girls, then who will be?
As a single father, I know how hard it is to balance the work and family time, so I couldn?t even imagine attempting to run the country while also getting in an acceptable amount of family time.
Obama is looking forward to making a positive impact in the country if he is re-elected.
?My hope is that getting past this election, people will have an opportunity to maybe step back and say, ?You know what? The differences that divide us aren?t as important as the common bonds we have as Americans.? ?
?And some of that I?m sure will require additional effort on my part. Hopefully, we?ll see more effort on the other side, as well,? he added.
Regardless of whether or not Obama gets elected back into office or not, I think his first priority is to be a father to his children and a husband to his wife. ?He is obligated to tend to those who reside under his roof first?and then tackle the duties of the oval office. The same ones who are criticizing him are probably the ones who have no control over their kids and will forever be trying figure out where they went wrong when it comes to parenting.
