NEW YORK (AP) ? People in the coastal corridor battered by superstorm Sandy took the first cautious steps to reclaim routines upended by the disaster, even as rescuers combed neighborhoods strewn with debris and scarred by floods and fire.
But while New York City buses returned to darkened streets eerily free of traffic and the New York Stock Exchange prepared to reopen its storied trading floor Wednesday, it became clear that restoring the region to its ordinarily frenetic pace could take days ? and that rebuilding the hardest-hit communities and the transportation networks that link them together could take considerably longer.
"We will get through the days ahead by doing what we always do in tough times ? by standing together, shoulder to shoulder, ready to help a neighbor, comfort a stranger and get the city we love back on its feet," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
By late Tuesday, the winds and flooding inflicted by the fast-weakening Sandy had subsided, leaving at least 55 people dead along the Atlantic Coast and splintering beachfront homes and boardwalks from the mid-Atlantic states to southern New England.
The storm later moved across Pennsylvania on a predicted path toward New York State and Canada.
At the height of the disaster, more than 8.2 million lost electricity ? some as far away as Michigan. Nearly a quarter of those without power were in New York, where lower Manhattan's usually bright lights remained dark for a second night.
But, amid the despair, talk of recovery was already beginning.
"It's heartbreaking after being here 37 years," Barry Prezioso of Point Pleasant, N.J., said as he returned to his house in the beachfront community to survey the damage. "You see your home demolished like this, it's tough. But nobody got hurt and the upstairs is still livable, so we can still live upstairs and clean this out. I'm sure there's people that had worse. I feel kind of lucky."
Much of the initial recovery efforts focused on New York City, the region's economic heart. Bloomberg said it could take four or five days before the subway, which suffered the worst damage in its 108-year history, is running again. All 10 of the tunnels that carry commuters under the East River were flooded. But high water prevented inspectors from immediately assessing damage to key equipment, raising the possibility that the nation's largest city could endure an extended shutdown of the system that 5 million people count on to get to work and school each day. The chairman of the state agency that runs the subway, Joseph Lhota, said service might have to resume piecemeal, and experts said the cost of the repairs could be staggering.
Power company Consolidated Edison said it would be four days before the last of the 337,000 customers in Manhattan and Brooklyn who lost power have electricity again and it could take a week to restore outages in the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Westchester County. Floodwater led to explosions that disabled a power substation Monday night, contributing to the outages.
Surveying the widespread damage, it was clear much of the recovery and rebuilding will take far longer.
When New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stopped in Belmar, N.J., during a tour of the devastation, one woman wept openly and 42-year-old Walter Patrickis told him, "Governor, I lost everything."
Christie, who called the shore damage "unthinkable," said a full recovery would take months, at least, and it would likely be a week or more before power is restored to everyone who lost it.
"Now we've got a big task ahead of us that we have to do together. This is the kind of thing New Jerseyans are built for," he said. President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit the state Wednesday to inspect the storm damage.
By sundown Tuesday, however, announcements from officials and scenes on the streets signaled that New York and nearby towns were edging toward a semblance of routine.
First came the reopening of highways in Connecticut and bridges across the Hudson and East rivers, although the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan, and the Holland Tunnel, between New York and New Jersey, remained closed.
A limited number of the white and blue buses that crisscross New York's grid returned Tuesday evening to Broadway and other thoroughfares on a reduced schedule ? but free of charge. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he hoped there would be full service by Wednesday. Still, school was canceled for a third straight day Wednesday in the city, where many students rely on buses and subways to reach classrooms.
In one bit of good news, officials announced that John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Newark International Airport in New Jersey would reopen at 7 a.m. Wednesday with limited service. New York's LaGuardia Airport remains closed.
The New York Stock Exchange was again silent Tuesday ? the first weather-related, two-day closure since the 19th century ? but trading was scheduled to resume Wednesday morning with Bloomberg ringing the opening bell.
Amtrak also laid out plans to resume some runs in the Northeast on Wednesday, with modified service between Newark, N.J., and points south. That includes restoring Virginia service to Lynchburg, Richmond and Newport News, Keystone trains in Pennsylvania, and Downeaster service between Boston and Portland, Maine.
But flooding continues to prevent service to and from New York's Penn Station. Amtrak said the amount of water in train tunnels under the Hudson and East rivers is unprecedented. There will be no Northeast Regional service between New York and Boston and no Acela Express service for the entire length of the Northeast Corridor. No date has been set for when it might resume.
But even with the return of some transportation and plans to reopen schools and businesses, the damage and pain inflicted by Sandy continued to unfold, confirming the challenge posed by rebuilding.
In New Jersey, amusement rides that once crowned a pier in Seaside Heights were dumped into the ocean, some homes were smashed, and others were partially buried in sand.
Farther north in Hoboken, across the Hudson from Manhattan, New Jersey National Guard troops arrived Tuesday night with high-wheeled vehicles to reach thousands of flood victims stuck in their homes. They arrived to find a town with live wires dangling in the floodwaters that Mayor Dawn Zimmer said were rapidly mixing with sewage. At nightfall, the city turned almost completely dark.
About 2.1 million homes and businesses remained without power across the state late Tuesday. When Tropical Storm Irene struck last year, it took more than a week to restore power everywhere. The state's largest utility, PSE&G, said it was trying to dry out substations it had to shut down.
Outages in the state's two largest cities, Newark and Jersey City, left traffic signals dark, resulting in numerous fender-benders at intersections where police were not directing traffic. And in one Jersey City supermarket, there were long lines to get bread and a spot at an outlet to charge cellphones.
Trees and power lines were down in every corner of the state. Schools and state government offices were closed for a second day, and many called off classes for Wednesday, too. The governor said the PATH trains connecting northern New Jersey with Manhattan would be out of service for at least seven to 10 days because of flooding. All the New Jersey Transit rail lines were damaged, he said, and it was not clear when the rail lines would be able to open.
In Connecticut, some residents of Fairfield returned home in kayaks and canoes to inspect widespread damage left by retreating floodwaters that kept other homeowners at bay.
"The uncertainty is the worst," said Jessica Levitt, who was told it could be a week before she can enter her house. "Even if we had damage, you just want to be able to do something. We can't even get started."
The storm caused irreparable damage to homes in East Haven, Milford and other shore towns. Still, many were grateful the storm did not deliver a bigger blow, considering the havoc wrought in New York City and New Jersey.
"I feel like we are blessed," said Bertha Weismann, whose garage was flooded in Bridgeport. "It could have been worse."
And in New York, residents of the flooded beachfront neighborhood of Breezy Point in returned home to find fire had taken everything the water had not. A huge blaze destroyed perhaps 100 homes in the close-knit community where many had stayed behind despite being told to evacuate.
John Frawley, 57, acknowledged the mistake. Frawley, who lived about five houses from the fire's edge, said he spent the night terrified "not knowing if the fire was going to jump the boulevard and come up to my house."
"I stayed up all night," he said. "The screams. The fire. It was horrifying."
There were still only hints of the economic impact of the storm.
Forecasting firm IHS Global Insight predicted it will end up causing about $20 billion in damage and $10 billion to $30 billion in lost business. Another firm, AIR Worldwide, estimated losses up to $15 billion ? big numbers probably offset by reconstruction and repairs that will contribute to longer-term growth.
"The biggest problem is not the first few days but the coming months," said Alan Rubin, an expert in natural disaster recovery.
Some of those who lost homes and businesses to Sandy were promising to return and rebuild, but many sounded chastened by their encounter with nature's fury. They included Tom Shalvey of Warwick, R.I., whose 500-square-foot cottage on the beach in South Kingstown was washed away by raging surf, leaving a utility pipe as the only marker of where it once sat.
"We love the beach. We had many great times here," Shalvey said. "We will be back. But it will not be on the front row."

A local resident?s electricity bill in the Orange County is said to show she pays $0.91 per month after remodeling to conserve energy. Going green seems to have worked to her benefit as well as many SoCal homeowners.?
Trees, shrubs and an eave seem to be serving enough shade to help use less energy in the home of many ?green? residents. Nonetheless, local residents have many tricks when remodeling by using energy efficient products. The swap of standard home appliances to green approved appliances, energy efficient lighting throughout the home, a solar panel roof and natural ventilation techniques are what have brought down homeowners? electricity bills a great deal. As for the $0.91 cents, I can?t verify that exactly but there is a definite savings in your electrify bill as well as green growth in the real estate market.
I have read about homeowners who spend $10,000 in upgrades to green approved modifications and products which have taken their home value up by an average of $38,000. It?s becoming common in California to see the average 9% peak in sales price once a home that is labeled with Energy Star or Greenpoint Rated (California approved seal). Sales of green certified homes are showing to be in the same market as the highest sales of hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius. These homeowners are making small improvements to their transportation as well as efficient HVAC systems, insulation and weather stripping which are all inexpensive changes that prove value.
Going green in your home is not only a great investment when it?s time to sell but more so while you live there. ?Going green needs to be done right if you want to make the most of your investment. Many interior designers as well as consultants in home improvement stores, such as Home Depot or Lowes, are certified in energy efficient products. Homeowners must be wise to know all improvements in a home may not be returned 100% but green living is evolving and paying off in most markets.

Nothing says fall like pumpkin? and nothing showcases pumpkin quite so well as a good old pumpkin soup!
As if all the nutrients in pumpkin weren?t enough (pumpkin is an excellent source of beta-carotene, vitamin C and calcium), we?ve teamed it up in today?s recipe with garbanzo beans, which also provide plenty of protein and iron.
The result? A delicious, velvety soup that is both warming and highly nourishing for your baby? not to mention easy to eat
This soup recipe is suitable for babies from 6 months of age who have already been separately introduced to all the ingredients. Some of the ingredients ? namely the garlic, onion, herbs and spices ? are not essential to the TEXTURE of the recipe, but do provide a robust, full flavour. That means you can leave them out if you don?t wish to include them in your little one?s diet as yet and your baby prefers a milder, more subtle flavour.
This recipe produces enough soup for a family of four to share? and we highly recommend giving it a try! The garbanzo beans give it a decadently creamy texture and it?s reassuring to know that the creaminess is from such a nutritious source!
If you don?t wish to use this as a family meal, then you can simply scale down the ingredients or freeze the leftovers ? this soup freezes nicely. You can also use portions of this soup as an interesting and unique sauce for pasta.
To Make Baby?s Pumpkin and Garbanzo Bean Soup You Will Need?
4 tbsp olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 lb fresh sugar pumpkin, peeled and diced
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 tsp paprika
2 tsp cumin
1 x 16 oz can of garbanzo beans (also known as chickpeas) ? either buy the reduced sodium variety or triple rinse regular beans and remove their skin
24 fl oz (3 cups) low sodium or homemade chicken stock
8 fl oz (1 cup) of pure, unsweetened apple juice
Heat the oil in a medium saucepan and add the onion and pumpkin.
Cook, stirring, for a minute or two, then add the garlic.
Continue cooking for several minutes until all the veggies are pale gold in colour.
Add the paprika and cumin and stir well, then pour in the garbanzo beans and the stock.
Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer, semi covered, for 30 minutes.
Add the apple juice, simmer for 5 minutes more.
Allow to cool, then puree in batches in a blender, or puree right in the pot with a hand blender until perfectly smooth.
Warm to a safe serving temperature and enjoy with baby.

?Gao Leng's relationships?
?Kuroh Dimercurio? : Well, first thing I notice here is that Kuroh speaks/reads/writes several languages fluently. Leng speaks/reads/writes several variations of Chinese fluently because of his families traditions and connections throughout China - He's kind of the go-to-guy to settle anything in that country. When it comes to other languages, he's very bad at them, limiting his speech and communication. So!! If Kuroh can speak any form of Chinese then I'd image they'd get along okay, since Leng could just speak normally opposed to overexerting himself. Leng also will also speak in Chinese when he's frustrated and so on, perhaps Kuroh would act as a translator of sorts?
Leng - "???????"
??? - "What did he say?"
Kuroh - "...He said 'You have the stench of a..pig.'.."
Dialects aside I still think they'd get along well. Leng treats the majority of guardians as if they were equals to him on L?n L?ng's hierarchy structure. Like 'brothers' and following oaths accordingly, without the insane loyalty and respect reserved for the Rizzo Famiglia. Which means he'd also protect Kuroh when the situation to do so arises. Though he wouldn't be sympathetic towards him, and probably critical at times when he acts too much like a young child - especially since he's a guardian of the Rizzo Famiglia. Another thing is that Kuroh likes reading, and Leng also has a fondness for literature. The art thing would work well, considering that Leng's quite a depressing individual himself. When it comes to Kuroh's other personality, I'd think Leng just leave it alone and for the most part let him do whatever without thinking much of it, since he's a lot stronger in that state of mind anyways.
?Nina Sakeruki? : I cannot imagine Leng being particularly fond of Nina. He's not accustomed to such upbeat, hyper personalities, so he'd probably see her as more of a nuisance than anything. Especially if she ever tried to help him, he wouldn't really react well to that. Of course, he'd still treat her as a family member, all those oaths and what not. He'd actually go out of his way to protect her a bit more than the others, considering she's a girl, and wasn't born into the whole mafia business. Other than that, he'd probably send her a number of smart (rude) remarks regularly. That's all I can think of right now.
?Sin Velarucci? : Leng probably wouldn't like Sin very much, too be honest. He's quite the opposite of the people in the L?n L?ng triad and how they expect people to act within their family. He would see Sin as a very selfish, rather immature type of person. I cannot see them getting along too well, since Sin is so carefree and what not, and Leng is rather the opposite, being more uptight. Though, he would certainly respect Sin's abilities and strength, and wouldn't look down on him. Though, Leng wouldn't be one to go to Sin for help, or assistance, at least not so easily.
He would simply think most of Sin's personality is a poor one, very unbecoming and even shameful - thinking that because he's a guardian of the Rizzo Famiglia he should act more dignified. So it should be said that Sin would be more of a target of smart (hella rude) critical remarks, similar to Nina, but too a worse degree, since Sin is a man and Nina is a girl. That would probably lead to several exchanges in physical attacks, as stated 'He would not hesitate to attack the person who offend him or even his fellow guardians if given the opportunity.' I think they'd get along better under some terms, such as more professional situations, or when Sin isn't acting in way that Leng would describe as 'unseemly'. So the relationship wouldn't be compleatly hostile, or of that sort.
In addition, if Leng ever found out that Sin is actually the son of Marietta Alesse Rizzo, and therefore Kurai's relative, he'd probably have a stroke. Okay, that's being a little dramatic, but he wouldn't take it well considering it would turn out that he was treating Sin inappropriately all this time.
?Alfonso Rizzo? : I think they would get along pretty well. They both share the same unyielding loyalty for Kurai, which Leng would respect. Although, since Alfonso has the surname Rizzo, their relationship wouldn't be very easy going, as Leng would see him not as an equal but as a superior. Kind of like seeing Alfonso as Kurai's right hand man, that sort of thing. His loyalty and respect towards Alfonso wouldn't be as intense as it is towards Kurai, but it'd still be pretty 'something else', and Leng would fulfill nearly any order from him. But I don't think their relationship would be a very strained one, since half of the time Alfonso is a pretty laid back kind of guy.
?Kurai Rizzo? : Alright, since she's the head of the Rizzo Famiglia, the way he treats her differs from the others. In his structured world, she is the top dog, the head honcho, etc etc etc. Her word is literally law and his loyalty is strongest towards her. No joke, if she told Leng to kill himself, he'd do it. Even if it came out of no where, it'd be done. She could easily make him do anything, even if it the request was completely terrible, or without a reason. Well, almost anything. If she requested of him something like...to stop treating her with so much respect, or stop acting so formally, he'd decline, saying that it would be improper. In any case he can still be rather stubborn when it comes to that stuff .. So, yeah, he'd treat her with nothing but respect, and be generally closed off from her because forming a bond that could be considered anything but one of a 'subordinate and a superior' (or whatever you want to call it) would also be improper.
Kuroh Dimurcurio: He would get along splendidly with him. He would most likely act like an older brother and try not to leave him alone for too long, as he sees how Dimurcurio gets anxious with nobody around. He may also be a bit protective of Kuroh and try to shield him from harm, of course if he had to choose between Kuroh and Kurai, the choice would be Kurai, but when it comes to somebody else, the most likely choice would be Kuroh. He'd probably try to get Kuroh to relax around him and not be so formal and subservient. If this is okay with you, akashi.
Gao Leng: He would have a mutual respect for this man because they are both loyal to Kurai and would be very warm with him and treat him like an equal and not a tool. Alfonso prefers to do things by himself, so the only things he would order from Leng is to protect and assist Kurai if she needs, but maybe nothing more. All in all, Alfonso would try to warm up to Leng and become his friend.
I'll try to add some more later, for now I'm going to work on Alfonso's profile.
I'll add my character relationship as soon as I finish drawing my friend a picture for her birthday and settle down a bit.
Also, there's a hurricane warning where I live and my school closed down for tomorrow. this means it's quite serious and the internet might go. So I may not be able to post for some time :/
I'm hoping the electricity stays and nothing bad happens but yeah. Just a warning~

Just north of the Indiana Toll Road, off Cline Avenue, sits the Gary/Chicago International Airport.
Its name sounds substantial. Its annual budget is in the millions of dollars. And Chicagoans -- along with citizens of Gary -- spend millions in tax dollars every year to help keep it in business.
But in spite of an annual operating budget of more than $3 million -- plus tens of millions more being spent on a runway expansion and other capital projects -- the GCIA terminal sits mostly empty. The front entrance is usually locked; the parking lot is nearly vacant, and the skies are -- for the most part -- empty.
That?s because GCIA has only one passenger flight -- Allegiant Airlines Flight 650. It flies nonstop from Sanford, Fla., to Gary, where passengers unload and new passengers board. Allegiant changes the flight number to 651, and the plane takes off and heads back to Sanford.
It?s time on the ground in Gary: Usually less than one hour.
Once the flight is gone, the terminal is shut down and locked up for several days. The Allegiant flight only comes to Gary twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. That?s it.
It?s one of the many curiosities of The Little Airport that Could.?
While the airport gets substantial funding from the City of Gary, the State of Indiana and the federal government, it gets additional millions of dollars every year from the City of Chicago -- more than $3.6 million dollars since the beginning of 2011 alone, financial documents reveal. Since 1995, Chicago has sent a total of more than $26 million to help operate the Gary airport.
It all comes from an agreement signed by the cities of Chicago and Gary in 1995, which proposed "the development, enhancement, and operation of existing airports and development of any new Regional Airport serving the Bi-State Region."
The agreement is commonly referred to as "The Compact,"?and the two mayors who signed it -- Richard M. Daley of Chicago and Thomas Barnes of Gary -- originally saw it as a fairly straightforward three-year deal. But it continued, and throughout the years it has often been used as a pawn in the political fights for a third airport in Chicago to counter the proposals to build such an airport in Chicago?s 10th Ward, or -- more recently -- in far-south-suburban Peotone.
"The Compact"?was also floated as a possible solution to the closing of Meigs, even before Daley ordered his bulldozers out to dig up Meigs? runways in the middle of the night in March of 2003.
Now -- 17 years later -- "The Compact"?still exists, and the money still flows in from Chicago.
More investigative reporting from NBCChicago
Part of "The Compact"?requires Chicago to send monthly checks to the Gary Airport from ticket fees paid by passengers arriving and departing at O?Hare and Midway Airports. Those fees alone amounted to $2.4 million paid to Gary in the past year and a half. This "Passenger Facility Charge" -- or PFC money -- is earmarked for capital projects like Gary?s 1900-foot runway extension, currently under construction, and the relocation of railroad tracks, which must be moved to provide sufficient clearance for larger planes to land on the newly-extended runway.
But on top of the passenger fees, Chicago taxpayers also send money to GCIA, every year, to help with the daily operation of the airport. In the past year and a half, that?s amounted to more than $1.1 million from Chicago taxpayers, over and above the $2.4 million from the ticket fees.
And Gary taxpayers pay millions more, each year, as well.
To date, there hasn?t been much to show for all that money. GCIA has seen commercial service come and go in past years -- notably PanAm, Southeast, and Hooters Air. There have been long periods where no passenger planes landed there. Even Allegiant, with its one flight twice a week, is technically not a commercial flight, but a travel service which operates charter flights to smaller-traffic airports. It just started flying in to Gary last February.
The flight itself appears to be a success, with low-cost tickets and easy online booking that regularly attracts a full load of passengers. But the question remains: Is all this tax money worth it, for just two passenger flights a week?
Karen Freeman-Wilson is Gary?s newly-elected, Harvard-educated mayor, and she has often cited GCIA as one of her top priorities for Gary?s struggling future. She is happy to see the nearly-full passenger loads on the Allegiant flight.
"I think it?s indicative of the demand that is pent up for the Gary airport," she said.
But she acknowledges that -- to date at least -- far less business has been generated than the money that is pumped in.
Also on NBCChicago.com: Butter bust of Obama takes to Chicago streets
"I think a lot has to do with the marketing effort," she said. "I think it?s important to be able to market Gary as a destination -- to market its proximity not just to Chicago but to downtown Chicago."
And once the runway expansion is complete, Freeman-Wilson sees things taking off.
"Ultimately I think there?s an opportunity for commercial and cargo service here,"?she said.
But the runway expansion has been a difficult and expensive process, primarily because of unforeseen difficulties in moving the railroad tracks, as well as dealing with construction waste and even oil dumped in the runway?s path.
In an effort to see what happens during a typical day at the terminal, NBC?Chicago went to the Gary/Chicago International Airport on a Wednesday. There was not an Allegiant flight scheduled for that day, but the thought was that maybe the terminal would be open for other operations.
That was not the case. The front doors were locked and the place was deserted.
So NBC Chicago returned, unannounced, at noon on a Thursday, when Allegiant does fly in. This time the front door was unlocked, but inside the airport was still virtually empty, with the lights turned off, the ticket counter dark and the baggage carousel silent and still.
A plaque on the wall noted that the terminal was renovated a decade ago. It still looks good as new.
The only people there were a security guard and approximately 15 TSA agents. Their supervisor said they are routinely borrowed from other airports -- South Bend and Chicago -- to come to GCIA twice a week to handle the Allegiant flight.
Finally, about an hour and a half before Allegiant?s scheduled arrival, the airport suddenly sprung to life. Crowds of couples and families snaked along the previously-deserted rope lines in front of the ticket counter. Others removed their shoes and loaded up grey plastic bins to go through security. And when the Allegiant flight arrived at about 2:50 p.m., more passengers streamed out into the terminal and outside to waiting cars. The terminal was truly bustling.
But after another hour, the approximately 140 passengers booked for Sanford were boarded, and the plane took off, not to return for three days.
Then the TSA agents packed up. The ticket counter closed down. And it was lights out until Sunday.
Statement from Chicago's Department of Aviation:
The City of Chicago continues to support the Compact as Gary Airport serves as a reliever airport in the regional Chicago airport system.?? The City recognizes that these are times of tight budgets and has reduced the annual contribution to the Chicago Gary Regional Airport Authority.
Takeoffs/Landings for area airports from Jan. 1 - Aug. 1, 2012:
Unit 5 looked at the daily air traffic -- including every takeoff and landing of passenger, private, and corporate aircraft -- at Gary/Chicago International Airport, and compared its traffic to that at other comparable airports in the Chicago/Northwest Indiana area.? In our survey of various time periods covering 2012, we found that Gary (GYY) had less daily traffic than Waukegan Regional Airport (UGN), Dupage Airport in West Chicago (DPA), Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling (PWK), and Chicago Rockford Airport in Rockford (RFD).?
In this chart, every takeoff or landing is counted separately.? For example, if a plane lands at an airport, and then takes off two hours later, it would count twice on this chart.?
One significant exception was August 2012, when GCIA served as the staging area for aircraft used in the Chicago Air and Water Show.

Marla Lopez is 54 but eats like a toddler.
She has never eaten a piece of fruit or tried a green vegetable. For as long as she can remember, her daily diet has consisted primarily of three kinds of foods: milk (and ice cream); white breads (including crackers, tortillas and pancakes); and potatoes (including chips and French fries).
Sometimes she?ll also eat bacon.
READ MORE: Is Picky Eating a Medical Condition?
Lopez said her picky eating started as an infant. She would gag on her baby food. Foods that most people would consider mouth-watering -? an omelet or a sandwich ? are now repulsive to her. Touching spaghetti is also out of the question.
?Good Morning America? correspondent Linsey Davis went shopping with Lopez at a Fairway Market in New York City. Not much made it into the cart.
Asked whether she?d consider items in the produce aisle, Lopez said, ?When I look at this, I don?t see food.?
Her favorite food is potato chips, she said, adding that they were ?so salty, and fresh, and potato-y. I love them.?
Lopez, a mother herself, acknowledged that her preferred foods were limited but added, ?I do love what I eat and enjoy it.?
As for whether her eating habits are more a simple desire for junk food than a real disorder, Lopez said, ?I?ve heard that all my life, all my life. It?s really embarrassing.?
Nancy Zucker, the director of the Center for Eating Disorders at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., says Lopez? is not alone.
?We don?t quite understand what adult picky eating is ? but what we do know is that there is a real biological struggle going on that?s not all in their heads,? said Zucker, who studies picky eaters.
Lopez is often compelled to hide her eating habits when she?s at parties. She?ll say she already ate, or she?ll just carry around a drink.
Despite her carb-heavy, vegetable-free diet, Lopez says she is healthy.
?My cholesterol is 174,? she said, by itself no cause for alarm. ?And I eat a bag of fries each day, and that?s my main staple.?

The movie is so clammily sensitive and tame that it stifles any strong response.
A sentimental, feel-good romance about pity sex.
The Sessions is bracing. It's also one of the few movies to recognize that people with severe physical disabilities have sexual lives, too.
A sweet but minor fictional parable about the strange possibilities of love.
A movie like this is really built around a performance, and John Hawkes - so powerfully evil in "Winter's Bone" and "Martha Marcy May Marlene" - carries the film.
"The Sessions'' treats intimacy with an explicitness and honesty that's very rare in movies.
Neither an issue-pushing disability drama or a crude, American Polio-style sex comedy, The Sessions is sweet and winning - 'feel good' minus the fingers down the throat.
Another dynamite vehicle for John Hawkes, in which Lewin's affecting script overcomes his pedestrian direction.
Skilled direction, a talented cast and a simple but elegant story will garner a lot of sympathy from its targeted, more mature audience.
It offers a relatable depiction of the powers of a positive mental attitude and perseverance in spite of horrendously bad luck. And some Oscar-caliber acting, to boot.
An incredibly low-key and feel-good adult movie about sex that's much funnier than most people are probably expecting, highlighted by a pair of Oscar-caliber performances by its two leads.
A frank exploration of sex and disability, The Sessions compensates for a minor structural misstep with an acute ear for tone and stellar performances throughout.
The bottom line here is that yes, a movie about a physically disabled man makes for one of the sexiest date nights of the year. Unless you're allergic to over-20s.
With Ben Lewin's film The Sessions, Hawkes is given the biggest and juiciest leading role of his career, and he pulls it off with remarkable grace and humor.
Less dreary than uplifting, The Surrogate succeeds as a light romance with heavy material.
The movie methodically punts each time it comes across anything interesting.
The Sessions is a magnificent film. This tale of a profoundly disabled man's sexual awaking is not only a genuine crowd pleaser , but it also gives a cinematic voice to the marginalized.
Mature but deeply powerful look at sex and the disabled.
Award-worthy performances from John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy.
This warm, witty, sensuous and quite wonderful study of a disabled artist terrifically avoids any "triumph of the human spirit" sentimentality.
The core of the move -- specifically the sessions between Mark and Cheryl -- is quite good.

Q: I like the idea of becoming more self sufficient and saving money: growing some of my own fruits and vegetables, making my own sauces and pantry staples, etc. But which things are worth growing or making, and which are better to buy?
Sent by Stuart
Editor: Great question, Stuart! This is something that a lot of us are thinking about and working towards. Another factor to keep in mind is how much time something takes (or that you're able to commit). I find that time commitment is the downfall of many of my good intentions to make something myself.
Take a look at our Make or Buy series for some good discussions on specific dishes and pantry staples, as well as some other posts we've done on the topic:
