Mitt Romney Insults Working Class, Calls Their Concerns 'Envy' (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Mitt Romney threw mud in the face of every hard-working lower- and middle-class American on the Today show on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. When discussing the problem of income inequality in America he said, "You know, I think it's about envy. I think it's about class warfare," according to Slate.com. He managed to include an insult to every struggling citizen and an attempt to blame them for their predicament in that brief comment. He even manages to suggest it's ungodly to worry about income disparity.

Romney said America should be a merit society. "I believe in a merit nation, an opportunity nation where people by virtue of their education, their hard work and risk taking and their dreams -- may be a little luck -- could achieve great things," Romney said, according to CNN.

First of all, that's big talk coming from a guy who never had to worry about where his next meal was coming from or whether he'd have a home. His father was a wealthy politician and he's connected to the rich and influential Pratt-Romney families, according to his ancestry report on Wargs.com.

Here's a simple truth for you, Mr. Romney: Until you spend a few decades under the threat of foreclosure and homelessness, sacrificing everything to save for your kids' college funds, watching them go untreated when ill because you aren't rich and don't have health insurance, driving 10-year-old cars with your fingers crossed that they will last just one more year, you don't have any idea how average citizens feel.

Your comments suggest that you really believe if Americans go to school, work hard and obey the rules they can become hyper successful on their own merits. That's just not true. There are legions of hard working, merit-worthy people in this country struggling to get by. There are legions of people who would be hard-working if they could just find jobs. There are legions of people who would give almost anything for the chance to go to college. The opportunities are just not there.

If there's class warfare going on, Mr. Romney, it's a war waged by the wealthy class against the middle and lower class. If you want someone to blame for the crisis in the United States, look to yourself and the members of your social and economic class. Don't try to place the responsibility of your class's victims.
