Goose Creek High School football team loses appeal

COLUMBIA ? Goose Creek High School football coach Chuck Reedy wouldn?t talk to reporters gathered outside the High School League office Wednesday night after his school lost its appeal to remain in the Division II-AAAA playoffs.

But later in the evening, Reedy indicated the fight might not be over.

?We?re looking at our options,? he said by phone.

The only option at this point is the court process, and it?s an avenue the school and Berkeley County School District indicated they are considering. But time is short. The Gators were scheduled to play Bluffton in the second round of the playoffs at home Friday night.

The High School League?s Executive Committee voted 9-2 to uphold Goose Creek?s ban from the playoffs for allowing an ineligible player to participate in games. Goose Creek requested a second vote, asking the committee to consider a hardship case for the student involved. That vote went 10-1 against the team. The name of the player involved was not disclosed.

Wednesday?s hearing came after High School League Commissioner Jerome Singleton?s ruling Tuesday that Goose Creek used an ineligible player and therefore was disqualified for the playoffs. He ruled the school must forfeit 10 games the player dressed for or participated in.

Goose Creek, the defending Division II-AAAA state champion, was the No. 1 team in the state with a 12-0 record, including a convincing victory last week over Conway in the first round of the playoffs. The Gators were scheduled to host Bluffton on Friday, but now Conway will travel to Bluffton for the second-round game.

Reedy said he doesn?t know what he will tell his players.

?They have done everything right and don?t deserved to be punished,? he said. ?I don?t know what I will say. Words won?t make it any better. Nothing I will tell them will make it better.?

The meeting was open to the public, but Goose Creek requested a closed session and reporters were forced to leave the room.

Jay Bender, an attorney for the S.C. Press Association, said the closed session violated the Freedom of Information Act.

?There was a lawsuit a number of years ago that determined the High School League was a public body,? he said. ?The closed hearing is in violation of the law. I don?t understand it. It?s a body that takes public money and holds private meetings. If they want to operate like that, they should become a private club.?

Bender said the school was being punished, not the student.

?The player doesn?t have to be identified publicly,? he said.

Rodney Thompson, the Berkeley County School District superintendent, said he was proud of Reedy and his players.

?Of course, we?re obviously disappointed with the decision and the impact it?s going to have on the Goose Creek players and the Goose Creek community,? he said. ?We?re going to move forward from this day on and we?re going to take care of our students. That?s our main concern.?

Goose Creek was hoping for a fate similar to Summerville?s in 2005. The Green Wave knowingly used an ineligible player on the junior varsity football team. The Executive Committee upheld Singleton?s ruling but granted Summerville mercy and let the Green Wave varsity team back into the playoffs.

In the appeal, Reedy and Goose Creek Principal Jimmy Huskey said they notified the league immediately upon learning that a student on the team might be ineligible. They said the school and district exercised the right to appeal based on extraordinary conditions that there was no ill intent and no competitive advantage was gained by the team, players, coaches, staff or administration.

The ineligible player was a transfer student, and the updated student transcript record in question was received after the student was enrolled at the school. The original transcript used at the beginning of the season was incomplete, and when the student registered for winter sports, an updated transcript was used and the error was found.

5-inch 1080p, 440ppi Android phones coming to the U.S., blowing past iPhone 5 Retina display

HTC is showing off the Verizon Droid DNA today at the special event in New York City, and the big news -- the HUGE news -- is the size and density of their display: a 5-inch fully 1920x1080p at a positively pornographic 440ppi. HTC has always loved pushing the envelop when it comes to specs, and this is obviously no exception. Back when Apple launched the iPhone 4 with Retina display, its 960x640 at 326ppi screen was well beyond anything else on the market, and it stayed that way for a long time. Even with the iPhone 5's 1136x640, still 326ppi screen, HTC is now far, far ahead.

If Apple wants to once again take the screen density crown, and keep app compatibility the same way they did when they went to @2x pixel-doubled Retina, they'd have to switch to @4X pixel-quadrupled super-Retina. That'd be 2272x1280, and unless they increase the physical size of the display, an even more ludicrous 652ppi.

Powering a display that big for any length of time is non trivial as well. The iPad 4's 2048x1536, 264 ppi Retina display required an increase in thickness and weight and a battery that wouldn't be out of place on a laptop. The iPad mini couldn't be made with Retina display.

Here's what those displays do and would look like, both in terms of pixel count and density and physical scale (44x44 pixel grid overlay). From left to right, iPhone 5 (purple), Droid DNA (green), iPad 4 (blue), theoretical iPhone @4x (red).

HTC is using a 2020 mAH battery to power the 141 x 70.5 x 9.73 mm, 138 grams Droid DNA. Apple, by contrast, is using a 1440 mAH battery, for 123.8 mm x 58.6 mm x 7.6 mm, 112 gram iPhone 5. However, the Droid DNA is using the same processor as the Nexus 4, a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 and MDM9615m, despite pushing 1920x1080 rather than 1280x768. It'll be interesting to see what that does for performance, since Apple's Retina devices always seem to take a performance hit for the first generation, and that's usually with all new (Apple A4) or beefed up (Apple A5X) processors.

Apple's priorities seem to be on making thinner, lighter, better devices, not bigger or denser ones, so this might well be a battle Apple is happy to sit out. Arguably, any increase in density beyond 300 ppi is lost on most human eyes anyway. Just like cameras, where better sensors are a smarter play than more megapixels, we might be hitting diminishing returns when it comes to displays.

Still, for people who want the biggest, densest phone screens possible, with the HTC Droid DNA on Verizon, there's a new monolith in town.

Mobile Nations' Phil Nickinson was at the Verizon event today, make sure you check out his full HTC Droid DNA hands-on.

Oklahoma DHS: Foster Parents Needed - NewsOn6.com - Tulsa, OK ...

TULSA COUNTY, Oklahoma -

There are more than 9,000 children statewide living apart from their families because of abuse or neglect.

Finding foster parents for siblings is one of the greatest challenges for the Department of Human Services.

Ulysses Allen is a child welfare specialist with the DHS. It's his job to match children with foster families, but the odds are against him.

"We get more kids in than families and, right now, we're pushing with this Pinnacle Plan, we're really trying to recruit more families," Allen said.

7/25/2012 Related Story: $100 Million Plan To Improve Oklahoma Foster Care System Approved

The gap is significant with about 1,000 children spread between 300 families in Tulsa County. The children who don't get into foster homes go into a shelter and, Tuesday, there were 70 children in there.

"Whatever it is you have to offer is better than what they have right now, and I'm not referring to their family, I'm referring to the shelter," said foster parent Ronda Davis.

Ronda and Keith Davis have three foster children in their home, and have taken care of 19 other children over the last five years.

The Davises said they've had a positive experience and have developed lifelong relationships.

DHS covers almost all of the cost.

The Davises said what people really need is likely inside them already.

"What you really need is love in your heart for a child and if you have that, you have everything you need to be equipped to take care of a child in need," Keith said.

Allen said the foster program often leads to adoption, because of the circumstances, but ideally it's just a bridge to protect the children while the family issues are sorted out.

"And we find a lot of families, who just needed a push, who say they had a problem and they're glad someone stepped in to help, and by that time a lot of families are reunited with their kids," Allen said.

DHS says the application process for foster parents takes about 60 days.

Contact the Bridge Resource Support Center to find out more about the process of becoming a foster parent.
