IT WAS an ?A plus? to the Conservative group on Wednesday when they delivered a number of first class (with honours) lessons to the ruling Labour group on education.
Portfolio holder, cllr Oliver Gerrish had proposed a motion which objected to change to the present GCSE system.
But over the next twenty minutes, the Tories managed to make a number of salient points that left may have left the Cambridge graduate being graded: ?Could do better.?
The Tory argument was very much based on congratulating Thurrock schools on their improvements but then raising the concern that, as shadow portfolio holder, cllr James Halden said: ?There is clearly a contradiction in that, exam results are going up but our position in international tables seem to be going down.?
Cllr Gerrish was concerned at returning to system where students from an early age were pigeon-holed.
He said: ?We have a real system of flexibility now and I would be worried at returning to a system where you have no room to imprive from the age of 14.?
The crux of the Tories argument was made by Fobbing councillor Mark Coxshall. He said: ?We want an education system that encourages social mobility.
?We want to see people from all schools on the front benches and not just Eton etc.?
The Conservatives continued their assault by making reference to the academy system.
Cllr Halden said: ?We do not want to see a race to the bottom. Or a system where it is teaching to the exam. I was educated in Thurrock and am very proud of that.
?As shadow spokesperson for education, I will strive for the best educational system possible for our students.?
Cllr Gerrish, now under sustained attack was defended by cllr Barbara Rice who made reference to the many achievements of his administration, however, the Tories asserted that he was answering a question that was not on the exam paper!
Cllr Lynn Worrall attacked the Tories. She said: ?My son got to university (Brunel) because of the system we now have. he would have found it much harder under the old GCE/CSE system.?
It was the waspish but perceptive humour of Orsett councillor Mike Revell that finally secured the honours.
Cllr Revell said: ?If cllr Gerrish was organising an event in the Olympics such as the hop,skip and jump. He would have the hop on one day, the skip, the next and after another days rest, the jump.?
But as a learned man such as cllr Revell knows, democracy is often viewed as the second best form of government.

Geneva, 28th July 2012 Marking World Hepatitis Day, the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) calls on the different organizations which make up the United Nations systems to take action to fight against Viral Hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C), a potentially fatal infection of the liver which affects 500 million people. Viral hepatitis is the cause of death of over one million people a year and, around the world, one in every 3 people has been exposed to either the Hepatitis B virus or the Hepatitis C virus. Even more worrying, those infected do not know this and for them the first indication of infection can be the development of liver cancer or liver failure.
EASL acknowledges the progress made in recent years, including the establishment of WHO's Global Hepatitis Programme and welcomes the recent publication of the WHO strategy to prevent and control viral hepatitis infection . However, Professor Mark Thursz, EASL Secretary General, noted that "viral hepatitis needs to be recognised as a serious threat in its own right and measures need to be taken to prevent those not yet infected from becoming infected and to ensure treatment is made available for those who are infected".
EASL laments the impact of the exclusive emphasis on HIV, TB and malaria in policies arising from the Millennium Development Goals. As part of the work he has recently been conducting in Africa, Prof. Thursz met a patient who told him "If I don't catch HIV soon I'll die." Life saving antiviral medications which work against both HIV and HBV are provided by the Global Fund for patients with HIV but denied for patients with HBV. Prof Thursz remarked that "Continuing to ignore viral hepatitis is discriminating and will compromise achievements in sustainable development. UNDP should give viral hepatitis the same priority as HIV, TB and malaria."
Prof. Markus Peck-Radosavljevic, EASL's Vice-Secretary, noted "Viral hepatitis is a global issue. We need WHO to take a more active role in setting standards to control the transmission of infection through medical interventions and blood products. It will be difficult to address the epidemic effectively until WHO establish screening and surveillance protocols in every region"

In 2004, the mortality rate for chronic liver diseases was estimated at 14.3 per 100.000 in the EU-25. This means that more than 70,000 Europeans are dying from chronic liver disease every year. Parenting can be very difficult at times, and sometimes this is because we utilize experiences that we had as children and teenagers with our own parents long ago. Indeed, parents exert lifelong influences on their children for good or bad. Learning how to be a better parent, and mastering top notch child rearing skills, is the key to bypassing your past and making your children?s future brighter and better. It is imperative that all parents, now and in the future, learn how to excel at the abilities. Being a positive parent and a good role model is the number one priority at all parents should have, especially when thinking about passing on these skills to their own children.
In front of your children is not the time to explode in anger with a full-blown argument. This is very bad for children, for any number of reasons. Children are not always the cause of arguments between parents, but usually the have the feeling that they are. So if there is tension between parents, your kids will know about it for sure. Raising children is about learning and teaching how to cope in all kinds of situations, so resolving a conflict is a great teaching tool. Children will learn lessons that can last a lifetime, when conflict is resolved in their presence. I can tell you that we have all been at the point sometime in our lives when we feel like we weren?t enough at something. All of our memories are tied to an emotion of some kind, and like this event, it brings back painful feelings. The lesson here for you as a parent is to be on top of things if your child is struggling in sports or any other activity. First, determine if the child really wants to participate. Don?t do all the talking about why they should or shouldn?t do the activity. Give your child a chance to give their two cents and then they will be more receptive to your guidance on what to do next. It is easy to get bogged down only looking at one situation, but by looking at how it might be a blessing in disguise will help your child see there might be something different for them in their future.
When you were a child, were you ever forced to do something that you could not stand to do, by one of your parents? We are not talking about taking out the trash or helping with the dishes, etc. More significant activities such as engaging in a particular sport or taking piano lessons, etc.
Good intentions of parents are not a good enough reason to force their children to play music or a sport that they don?t want to play. How many children do you know who play a sport, because they have talent, to please their parents, only to end up in frustration? Parents should find out what their children have passion for and push them in that direction by being honest about their abilities. Being a keen observer and a great communicator will go a long way in becoming a great parent. Often times parents do too much talking, so give your children a chance to be a part of the conversation.

Apple has been on a social networking kick lately, what with Twitter's footings in iOS 5 and OS X Mountain Lion as well as Facebook's upcoming presence in iOS 6. From what the New York Times hears, that fascination could become more of a fixation. The company has reportedly chatted with Twitter in past months about the possibility of investing money on the scale you'd normally expect from a later-stage venture capitalist: the newspaper is talking "hundreds of millions" of dollars based on Twitter being valued at more than $10 billion. Any such deal would be less about funding (Twitter purportedly has $600 million-plus in the bank) and more about getting cozy in a social world where Apple still has some learning to do. Apple might equally want to dissuade competitors from getting any ideas, we'd add. Neither side will comment, and the negotiations aren't even supposed to be active at present. Regardless, that Apple might have even toyed with a social networking investment could represent a major change in tack for a company that's not always known for playing well with others.
MIAMI (AP) ? A South Florida woman posing as a doctor was arrested Thursday and charged in the death of a woman who died after authorities said her body was pumped with unknown toxic substances during a buttocks-enhancement surgery.
Shatarka Nuby, a 31-year-old mother, paid a woman known as "Dutchess" hundreds of dollars to come to her house and inject her buttocks, hips, thighs and breasts with an unknown substance. The Dutchess, whose real name is Oneal Morris, sometimes wore medical scrubs and a stethoscope. She allegedly sealed Nuby's injections with super glue and cotton balls, according to Broward County Sheriff's deputies.
Nuby told friends the injections became hard and hot and that her skin turned black. She wrote a letter to Department of Health investigators before her death in March in Tallahassee. An assistant medical examiner said she suffered "massive systemic silicone migration" from the injections, according to a release from the sheriff's office.
Authorities said Nuby was one of several victims who sought out 32-year-old Morris for cosmetic procedures. Some of the victims developed complications and infections after the injections, which included bathroom caulk, cement, Super Glue, Fix-A-Flat and mineral oil into the bodies of his victims, deputies said.
Morris was arrested at her mother's South Florida home Thursday and charged with manslaughter. Her attorney, Michael Mirer, declined comment.
Morris ? who police say was born a man and identifies as a woman ? was also arrested last fall after nearly a year of being sought and charged with practicing medicine without a license with serious bodily injury. Authorities said a victim who was looking to get a job at a nightclub and wanted a curvier figure paid Morris $700 for the injections in 2010. Morris allegedly used some type of tubing and inserted the toxic chemicals into her backside during a painful procedure.
