COLA to welcome variety of speakers, writers in November - The ...

Marshall University will soon welcome an array of speakers and writers for events sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts. ?
On Tuesday, John M. Glen will speak in the MU Foundation Building at 7 p.m. as the first of two guest speakers coming to campus this month for The Long Civil Rights Movement in America lecture series.

Glen, a scholar of Appalachian history, will discuss the region?s role in the civil rights movement, specifically the Highlander School in Tennessee.

During the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s, the school was heavily connected to civil rights. Icons of the movement like Septima Clark taught there. Rosa Parks studied there before embarking on her bus protest. The school was even involved in educating black voters in the South about voter registration and literacy requirements. ?
The series continues Tuesday, Nov. 13, when Bettye Collier-Thomas comes to campus to speak about the contributions of women to the civil rights movement and how their prominent involvement helped spark much of the activism adopted by later women?s groups.

??It?s been a collective effort of seven sponsors, and countless hours of work by a number of very dedicated folks who believe in the mission of our university,? David Trowbridge, Marshall?s director of African American studies said. ?I hope our students take advantage of this ... they will not be disappointed.?

On Nov. 14, poets Crystal Good and Neil Carpathios will be at Marshall for the Visiting Writers Series.

Good, a poet who writes on everything from mountain top removal to quantum physics, is a member of Affrilachin (African American Appalachian) Poets. The Charleston resident was recognized by then-Gov. Joe Manchin as a West Virginia Innovative Artist in 2005.

Carpathios, the coordinator of creative writing at Shawnee State University, is the author of three books of poetry. He has received grants from both the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment of the Arts.

On Nov. 29, George Edwards III, author of ?Why The Electoral College is Bad for America,? will come to campus to offer his opinion on the Electoral College and the presidential election.

Edwards will be the last speaker in this semester?s Amicus Curiae lecture series, though it will continue next semester.

?The lecture series brings people in from around the country to talk about issues of importance constitutionally and politically,? series coordinator Patricia Proctor said. ?People are interested...it?s gone very well so far.?

Mentally Ill

Renee is mentally ill ? meaning her illness is all in her head. She is not exactly a hypochondriac but she certainly has hypochondriac-like tendencies. Renee will feel a part of her rib and believe she is feeling a malignant growth. On another day she?ll consider the tingle in her left arm the onset of a major heart attack.

Aside from her ?mental illness? she makes a great English teacher because, despite any faults, Ms Renee Cumberbatch has redeeming qualities. She has the ability to leave her personal life at the door of her classroom. When she steps through the door she is the consummate professional there only for the sake of her students.

That particular redeeming quality ended at the school yard at 3 pm. By the time Renee drove off she was prone to fall right back into her usual pattern of complaining about the little things. Her girlfriend Barbara would grow weary of Renee?s complaints but would overlook them in favor of the good things Renee offered.

Tonight, Renee had droned on and on about her requirement to renew her teaching license every 5 years. Barbara had barely walked in the door before Renee pulled into her driveway and she didn?t know if she was up for it today. She had had a long day and she knew what that frown on Renee?s face meant.

Good ole patient Barbara had invited her to stay for dinner anyway, and after a glass of Chardonnay, Renee was in full complaint mode. Barbara relaxed, determined to hear her friend out with an open mind.

?Why should I have to renew my license at all?? ?If the district wants me to earn 15 credits in five years then shouldn?t they pay for it? ?$350 for just 5 credits!? Barbara patiently reassured Renee that it was important for teachers to refresh their teaching methods and keep current with the new trends in education.

Ms Renee Cumberbatch was slightly mollified and when she got home that evening she began her search for a continuing education course. The first course she chose, ?Step By Step Drawing,? was an interesting looking drawing course where she could have fun with basic sketching.

If anyone had asked Renee if she thought herself mentally ill Renee would have replied that we are all mentally ill to some degree and gone on to ask you why you asked. Renee was completely confident that what she believed and how she behaved was the only sane way to think and behave.

Anyone who thought otherwise was an idiot.

Normal Biology: Marvelous Mossy Millipedes

I learned a new word recently: epizoic. It's related to epiphytic, which describes the relationship of plants that grow on top of other plants (think of bromeliads or lichens that grow on trees). While epiphytic plants have a house, epizoic plants have a mobile home---they grow on top of animals.

And what do some mosses use as a mobile home? Millipedes! In a paper published in December 2011, S. Daniela Mart?nez T. et al. describe this relationship between 10 species of mosses and a tropical millipede, Psammodesmus bryophorus.

Obviously this millipede is at the cutting edge of fashion.

Field work for this study was done at the Reserva Natural R?o Nambi in Colombia. As the scientists sorted the 124 millipedes they collected, they noticed that some of their P. bryophorus specimens looked a bit green...because they had moss growing on their backs. (Sadly, the paper doesn't indicate whether or not the mosses caused any uncomfortable itching.)

Intrigued, they set to work and checked the 20 P. bryophorus millipedes they collected and found that 15 of them had mossy backs. One enterprising male was conducting a party train--he had 55 individual moss plants on his back. For a closer look at how the mosses grow, check out the next photo.

The authors provide a guess as to why the mosses choose this species as land to build upon: it provides a stable surface. Better to build your house on a rock than decomposing leaf litter, eh? The mosses may provide an advantage for the millipede as well: P. bryophorus has a few racing stripes down its back, and the mosses cover those up, providing camouflage. These working hypotheses will have to be tested further, of course, but they're plausible.

A final fun fact? Spores from these mosses can fall off the millipede and grow into new plants elsewhere. Imagine that, a millipede imitating Johnny Appleseed. Maybe it should be named Mildred Mossspore.

LINCOLN ? Niagara Regional Police are looking for four male suspects who attacked a group of teens in Beamsville on Halloween.

The incident happened Wednesday around 9:30 p.m.



Police say three male teenage friends were socializing on the front steps of Beamsville Secondary School, located at Central Ave, when a silver, four-door car stopped in the area.

Four male occupants exited the vehicle wearing black and white ?skull? masks which concealed their identities.

The masked males then threw eggs at the teens and an altercation ensued resulting in one of the suspects attacking two of the teens with a weapon.

Both victims received injuries, which resulted in one suffering serious facial injuries requiring medical attention.

Police are seeking the public?s assistance in identifying the suspects.

Apple's iPad Mini Launch Is Behind Schedule In ... - Business Insider

I'm currently waiting in line for Apple's newest gadget, the iPad mini.

Despite the lukewarm response for the iPad mini -- it's a little bit pricey, and the screen isn't fantastic -- I arrived at Apple's flagship 5th Ave cube at 6:45 a.m. to buy one. I wasn't surprised to find that the line had already stretched halfway down the Street.

What's surprising to me is not that the line wrapped from 5th Avenue in Manhattan all the way past Madison Ave, but that Apple switched up a key part of its wait process.

Today, iPad mini's will not go on sale until 10 a.m. Typically products are sold starting at 8 a.m.

I'm not sure if this is a New York-specific thing because of the hurricane, or if Apple is starting something new: making people wait longer.

The 8 a.m. time-slot allowed customers to get in, before work, get their shiny new gadget and make it to work at a reasonable hour. 10 a.m. doesn't.

I hope that this is a one-time thing and Apple doesn't start selling all new flagship products at a much later, 10 a.m.

For now, I'll wait the 2 extra hours. And really, considering what's happened to other parts of New York City, it's not that big of a deal.

New medication shows promise as lipid-lowering therapy for rare cholesterol disorder

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? An international effort led by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has resulted in positive phase 3 clinical trial results for a new medicine to treat patients suffering from a rare and deadly cholesterol disorder.

Penn researchers report in The Lancet that lomitapide, a first-in-class microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) inhibitor, substantially and stably reduced LDL cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) in patients with the orphan disease homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). Lomitapide works by inhibiting MTP, which is required for the production of VLDL -- the precursor to LDL.

HoFH patients have markedly elevated blood levels of cholesterol -- generally greater than 500 mg/dL -- due to genetic mutations in the LDL receptor gene that result in impaired ability of the liver to remove LDL from the blood. Heart and vascular disease often develop in childhood, and the average age of death even with current therapies is about 30 years. HoFH patients do not respond well to the usual treatments for elevated cholesterol, such as statins. The only effective therapy for these patients is apheresis, an invasive and time-consuming procedure that involves physically removing excess LDL from the bloodstream and must be repeated every one to two weeks.

The current study was an open-label trial that comprised a six-month phase designed to assess the efficacy of lomitapide when added to standard of care and an additional year-long phase to assess safety and tolerability. Twenty-nine adult HoFH patients from across the world were enrolled, with 23 patients completing both the efficacy and the safety phases. All of the patients received lomitapide along with conventional lipid-lowering therapies including statins and, in some cases, apheresis. The lomitapide dose was gradually increased from 5 mg to a maximum tolerated dose of up to 60 mg per day. Median dose was 40 mg per day. At the end of the efficacy phase, LDL-C levels were reduced by an average of 50 percent from baseline. Approximately one-third of the patients experienced levels of LDL-C that were less than 100 mg/dl -- close to the recommended therapeutic goals -- at some point during the study, and concomitant lipid-lowering therapy was modified in a subset of these patients during the safety phase. Despite these changes in treatment, patients' mean LDL-C levels were still reduced by 38 percent at the end of the study.

"The magnitude of this reduction in LDL-C and the fact that some patients reached or approached the LDL-C therapeutic goals is truly remarkable for this high risk population that historically doesn't respond to lipid-lowering drugs," said the study's lead author, Marina Cuchel, MD, PhD, research assistant professor of Medicine at Penn. "A reduction in LDL-C of this magnitude is certainly expected to favorably alter the clinical course of this devastating disease."

Senior study author Daniel J. Rader, MD, chief, Division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics, has treated HoFH patients for more than two decades. In the early 1990s, Rader worked with colleagues to determine that mutations in MTP were the cause of a rare condition characterized by absent LDL in the blood, establishing MTP as a therapeutic target to reduce LDL. His colleagues then went on to discover the MTP inhibitor lomitapide at Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS). Rader led a study at Penn in the late 1990s showing that lomitapide substantially reduced LDL in patients with moderately elevated LDL. However, because the agent caused some gastrointestinal side effects and increased liver fat, BMS decided to abandon further development of lomitapide for a much larger population of patients with elevated levels of cholesterol. Rader convinced BMS to donate the drug to Penn so that he could continue to develop it in patients with HoFH. Based on its mechanism and on a study in a rabbit model of the disease, Rader felt it would be effective against HoFH.

A proof of principle study conducted by Drs. Cuchel and Rader at Penn in six HoFH patients confirmed that lomitapide was highly effective in reducing LDL and provided the basis for the international phase 3 study, which was funded in part by the Office of Orphan Product Development at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Aegerion Pharmaceuticals in-licensed lomitapide from Penn in 2006, helping fund the completion of the study and the additional work required to submit a new drug application to the FDA.

On October 17, 2012, the FDA's Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee recommended by a vote of 13 to 2 the approval of lomitapide to reduce LDL in patients with HoFH. The FDA is scheduled to make a final decision on approval of the medication by the end of year.

"The more than 15-year story of this therapy is the result of an enormous collaboration between academia, foundation, pharmaceutical and biotech industries, and the government," said Rader. "If lomitapide is approved and is made available to patients with this fatal disease, it will serve as a model for how different sectors can work together to bring new medicines to patients with large unmet medical need."

Other study authors from Penn include Emma A. Meagher, MD, and Kathleen J. Propert, ScD. The site study team at Penn included also Daniel Kolansky, MD and Bruce Sachais, MD, PhD.
